WANTAGH, NY On Sunday October 19th over 80 cadets and senior members from across the squadrons within CAP's Long Island Group assembled in the pre-dawn at Jones Beach State Park to lend their support in the fight against breast cancer. Major Lou Fenech of the Col. Francis S. Gabreski Squadron led a CAP team that provided logistical support for the American Cancer Society's annual "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk. CAP members provided security and parking details, manned relief stations and also walked the 5-mile route to aid participants in distress.

The cadet staff headed by C/Lt Col. James Ridley II, and c/1st Lt. Stephanie Filiberto managed shift assignments throughout the walk-a-thon. Although unseasonal weather was a concern, cadets rotated in on breaks were able to warm up with hot chocolate and a bowl of Major Fenechs homemade "stewp" a long-time squadron recipe.

Despite the high winds and low temperatures along the ocean shore line, 50,000 walkers whose number included survivors, loved ones, relatives and friends of deceased cancer victims and those who came out to support "the cause" helped raise over $3 million to fund breast cancer research, education and advocacy. The day was also special for several CAP members in attendance; they too walked in honor of friends and family members.
